Shelduck
Tadorna tadorna
Seil-lacha

The Shelduck is Ireland’s largest duck – the size of a small goose. It is surprisingly common and widespread as a winter visitor to muddy estuaries and inlets. It is also a widespread breeder in Ireland. The Shelduck is strikingly beautiful, with its black-and-white plumage, orange breast band, under-tail patch and dark green head. The sexes are alike, though the male is larger and has a conspicuous knob on top of the bright red bill..
