Teal
Anas crecca
Praslacha ghlaseiteach

The Teal is Ireland’s smallest duck, being little bigger than a Moorhen. In winter it is more widespread and abundant than it appears. The drake is a beautiful but subtly marked bird with rust-coloured and shiny green head, spotted breast and finely marked grey body. As with most other ducks, the female is dull and brownish. Teal call from the water with a curious ringing note when anxious. Some Teal stay and breed in Irish wetlands but they are not common breeders.
