Pochard
Aythya ferinas
Poiseard
The Pochard is quite widespread as a winter visitor to Irish lakes – it is even abundant in some places. Unlike the Tufted Duck, it only rarely breeds in Ireland. The male Pochard is greyish with black breast and rear end. The head is deep rust-coloured. The female is much duller. In flight, both sexes show pale grey wing bars and the flight is rapid and direct like that of the Tufted Duck, to which it is similar in size and shape.
