The Redwing

Turdus iliacus

Redwing
Turdus iliacus
Deargán sneachta

The Redwing is the northern counterpart of the Song Thrush. The brown upperparts are darker and less warm in tone. The pale underparts are much more heavily streaked and marked with black. There is a clear yellowish eyestripe. A deep rusty patch is visible on the flanks and is further revealed as an underwing patch by the Redwing in flight. The call is a thin “ts-eer”. They are abundant and widespread winter visitors, mainly from Iceland.

From the Appletree Press title: Birds of Ireland.
Also from Appletree: Animals of Ireland.

Both titles are also available as Deluxe Hardback Editions from Appletree Press.
