Aengus [Aonghus] (m) 'one vigour'.
This early name, still found in Ireland, was once often used. Aengus of the Birds was the love god of the pagan Irish. St Aengus the Culdee was a well-known bearer of the name. Another form probably occurs in Arthurian romance, borne by King Anguish of Ireland. Aeneas was used as a substitute name.
The Scottish form of Aengus, Angus, is also found in Ireland. The variants Oengus, Hungus, Ungus and Enos are also found.
