What is really easy to describe is the weather: mostly, raining or cloudy. Nevertheless, when the clouds allow you to have a look at Ireland you can discover a beautiful country. The landscape ranges from green soft hills, mountains covered with grass on the bottom and stones at the top, lakes separated by small islands, fields divided by stonewalls and full of cows, sheep or horses over small villages, single houses and bigger cities to beaches, cliffs, bays and last but lovely the sea. And sometimes although you are not far away from the next town or village you feel like standing in the middle of nowhere.
There are several experiences I will for sure remember. For instance, caving in County Fermanagh, hiking along the North Coast, cycling on the Aran Island or taking a sunbath on a beach in County Donegal. Although the sea is really cold here, we went sunbathing and were quite lucky because it was a wonderful sunny !!!!! day.
Caving in a cave near Enniskillen was great fun. Concerning the wetness it was like a presign of the coming rainy periods. Concerning colours it was like seeing pure black the first time. Imagine you are standing in the middle of a river in a dark cave lightened only by some lamps, wet and freezing. Then, you are supposed to switch off all lights - nothing - there is really absolutely nothing which would be recognizable in front of your eyes.
Or, for instance, the wind. We were hiking along the North Coast - my absolute favourite - and it was a totally windy day. Although we were standing we could lay back in an angle of about 60 degrees and we did not fall down. Walking downhill was very comfortable because we felt as if carried by a soft pillow. The only problem was that once the wind stopped we suddenly felt a big step forward.
I like cycling but I prefer to go downhill than to go uphill. On Aran Island I had the chance to practise both. Clever as we were we wanted to try a path in the middle of the island. The first part was just uphill, full of big stones and bordered by stonewalls. Stonewalls are a characterisic of Ireland. They consist - of course - of stones which are put together. The interesting thing is that they stick without any material between them and they are already many, many years old and still standing. On the top we received the reward for exercising: a marvellous view over the whole Aran Island, surrounding islands and the sea. The second part downhill was an exciting experience. Stones everywhere, steep and fast because I was too lazy to use my brakes the whole time.
What to say about the people here. As I will leave this weekend I can be honest. But, first of all, I think that it is time to explain who I am and what I was actually doing here in Ireland.
My name is Hille, I am Austrian and studying computer science. I have been working for Appletree Press for two months. My job was part of the IAESTE exchange program. I was one among over 100 students working in Belfast and the countryside during this summer. During the week we were working and filled the pubs in the evenings, and on the weekends we were visiting the island, behaving like tourists and filled the pubs in the evening. I made many friends from different cultures here and I think I will miss them because we shared our life, our problems and experiences for a summer - or what was supposed to be one - had great fun and enjoyed ourselves.
But what about the Irish people? Some of them keep their distance and look straight forward; most of them are openminded, very friendly and you are welcome every time and there are also people who seem to be very relaxed and funny. I cannot understand how they survive to have to queue at a place shown by a sign in every official building.
During my stay here I developed two explanations for the Irish people's kindness. Firstly, they are like that because as I am a foreign student, they knew to get rid off me soon or secondly, their kindness is actually part of their character. I will go home and promote the second explanation.
Two months ago I left my home without being very happy about doing that. But, now I am sure that this was one of my best decisions I ever made. It was a great summer here.
There is only one favour I would ask for: Stop the rain!
And here is a little riddle for those who would like to make their own experiences:
