An impressive gate and a long wooded drive bring you to Annesbrook, an interesting house, the core of which is seventeenth century with additions of different periods. The pedimented portico of the house and the ballroom were added on to impress George IV when he came here in 1821, and the front entrance hall is beautifully proportioned with a lovely winding staircase. Another distinguished visitor was William Thackeray. However, the formal hospitality of those days has been replaced by a relaxed and welcoming family atmosphere. All of the bedrooms are spacious and comfortable, with folders detailing events of local interest and suggested walks and drives to local attractions. Each bedroom has tea- and coffee-making facilities and hairdryers. The reception rooms have big log fires. Evening meals, which are available on some days, must be booked in advance. The ingredients feature home grown organic vegetables picked fresh daily from the walled garden. There is a wine licence. Smoking in the sitting room only. No pets. The house can be found seven kilometres north of Ashbourne.
